Shark smart advice from Greg Piper, our local MP

Sharks always get people’s attention. We seem to have a primal fear of what we consider to be an unseen predator and language used around them (particularly in the media) such as a shark stalking or lurking would have us believe that we are a target species for sharks. That’s not the case and encounters with sharks are actually quite rare, particularly where an attack occurs, however it does happen from time to time and that tends to reaffirm people’s worst fears. This video deals with the facts around sharks generally but specifically in our beautiful Lake Macquarie and touches on why having sharks in the lake is a good sign. People will debate the merit of netted swimming areas on the lake and that’s understandable, however this video isn’t about whether or not we should provide those facilities. It was excellent working with NSW DPI Fisheries on this and getting some insight into their fascinating work #sharksmart
